Birthday at the Farm!

We celebrated James' birthday early at the farm since most of our relatives live in NC.  And we tested out the borrowed Octopus cake pan for the event.
While James was napping we prepared food and decorated.  Streamers from the door frames and enough balloons underfoot to annoy all the adults and thrill James.  Plus helium balloons from Nana and Grandad.  When he woke up from his nap I carried him down the stairs and he saw all the people and decorations and was grinning from ear to ear.
We had chili & rice with cornbread and all the fixings.  One of James' favorite meals.

Then came the gifts...lots of them!  (and for which we have to still write thank yous)
James was a lucky and blessed little boy- getting train tracks, legos, clothes, a latch puzzle (which basically has taught James to open every kind of lock and latch out there- not sure this was a skill we should have encouraged :)

After gifts we had his octopus cake (a chocolate sour cream cake worth making at every opportunity) served on a sea of blue tangy whipped cream.  James tried to blow out the candle but was too far from the candle (which was probably a blessing as his blowing involves quite a bit of spittle).
Then he tried to grab the flame so I quickly blew it out for him.

He requested the head...so had a dessert companion.

All in all, one very happy and well loved little boy.
